Sustainable, Safe and Intelligent Transport and Mobility Research Network (RITM) – REDES

A national strategic network to lead the future of mobility

The Sustainable, Safe and Intelligent Transport and Mobility Research Network (RITM) is a strategic initiative driven by Spain’s four technical universities (UPC, UPM, UPV, and UPCT), coordinated by Dr. Luis Jofre i Roca. Its mission is to establish a national advisory and knowledge transfer structure that bridges advanced research with the institutional and industrial sectors.

RITM emerges in response to the urgent need for integrated solutions to the growing challenges of mobility, overcoming fragmented knowledge through a transdisciplinary approach. The network aims to provide expert support for the design and implementation of public policies on intelligent, safe and sustainable transport, aligned with the 2030 Safe, Sustainable and Connected Mobility Strategy. It also seeks to strengthen Spain’s leadership in European transport innovation.

A collaborative ecosystem to transform transportation

The project is built around CIIMA-UP4, a joint research and innovation center currently in the final stages of formalization, which brings together over 600 researchers with interdisciplinary expertise in infrastructure, digitalization, urban transformation, and new mobility models. Through this structure, RITM establishes a dynamic connection between academia, industry, public administrations, and leading international networks.

Among RITM’s strengths are its partnerships with both major corporations and SMEs, its involvement in international consortia such as CARNET (founded by Volkswagen Research, SEAT, and UPC), and its active participation in global platforms including EIT Urban Mobility, UITP, GAIA-X, and NECTAR.

RITM’s roadmap includes national coordination meetings, participation in international conferences, development of synergies with local and national authorities, and the promotion of activities in innovation, training, and talent development. These actions will enable the transformation of scientific knowledge into impactful and sustainable policies, with a comprehensive approach that addresses both technological and societal dimensions.

In doing so, RITM positions itself as a key instrument for building a smarter, fairer, and more resilient mobility system that serves the public good and advances sustainable development.
