FUTURE URBAN MOBILITY

Mobility stands on the threshold of what can be described as the largest and most important shift in technological, environmental, economic and societal challenges in a century. Cities all over the planet are getting bigger and the trend in sprawling megacities seems unstoppable. The revolution in urban living requires new mobility solutions integrating infrastructure, traffic systems, vehicle use and resources such as energy, space and time, which are increasingly limited.

On-demand mobility, car and ride sharing or last-mile delivery services have already become important trends in transportation and in the global economy today. Cities are becoming smart and smarter, exploiting distributed control of highly sensorised equipment and infrastructure. But the vehicles of the future have to integrate into the urban environment in a compatible way, meet the needs of people and fulfil their individual mobility service requirements. Intelligent vehicle systems properly integrated with ICT applications offer new ways of meeting high levels of safety and comfort by applying new environment detection systems and vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication.

Innovative concepts and research approaches are needed to address the future of urban mobility resulting in new customer orientated business models and services for rising profitability.
