sCOOL2walk: Achievements 2023 in Safe and Sustainable School Commutes

As the year 2023 comes to a close, the sCOOL2walk project, led by CARNET and supported by the city councils of Barcelona, Malta, and Riga, reflects on its journey and accomplishments.

sCOOL2walk’s core focus is on connecting children and parents for safe and sustainable walks to and from school, achieved through the development of an innovative web application that leverages technology. The creation of a walk-sharing community through this technology has not only fostered safe journeys for children to school but also collaboration and community spirit.

2023 Key Achievements:

  • Technological Solution Development: Over the past year, the sCOOL2walk app has been meticulously developed, connecting families and promoting shared journeys. This achievement represents a significant step toward a safer and more collaborative school mobility experience.
  • Tested and Proven: Extensive testing of the web application took place in partner cities—Barcelona, Malta, and Riga—with positive feedback and engagement, confirming the utility of sCOOL2walk in enhancing the school commute experience.

2023 Objectives Met:

  • Promoting Walkability: Data-driven walkability insights have successfully enhanced walkability among children and within school ecosystems.
  • Empowering Independence: The project’s efforts have fostered a sense of independence and environmental awareness among children, laying the foundation for a more empowered generation.

2023 Phase Highlights:

  • Phase 1Workshops: Workshops conducted in April and May in Malta, Barcelona, and Riga identified mobility patterns, forming the basis for the app’s development.
  • Phase 2App Development: Based on information gathered from workshops, routes, schedules, and a Stated Preference Survey, the app was customized to meet the unique needs of each community.
  • Phase 3Pilots in Schools: From September to November, the sCOOL2walk app underwent testing in four schools across the three partner cities.
  • Phase 4Results & Dissemination: The outcomes were unveiled at the closure event of the project in Malta on December 11.
