December 21st, 2021-. After taking part in the ScaleTHENGlobal acceleration programme and presenting their start-up at the Smart City Expo World Congress 2021, Meep, Vianova and Dashfactory were the three selected start-ups to receive the funding and tools necessary to develop a pilot of their project in a city, specifically in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Istanbul and Milan, respectively.
ScaleTHENGlobal is an acceleration programme funded by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology funded by the European Union, and led by CARNET, the research hub on the mobility of the future.
Three innovative startups to help improve mobility in cities
Meep presents an innovative solution that connects the different forms of transport in a city through a multimodal mobility platform. They have an internal team of developers made up of 30 professionals and their proposal is fully scalable and adaptable to any city, being able to adapt perfectly to the transport offer of each territory. Meep is currently present in 9 European cities: Barcelona, Seville, Asturias, Zaragoza, Cyprus, Malta, Valencia, Malaga, Lisbon and soon in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria thanks to the ScaleTHENGlobal programme.
On the other hand, Vianova is launching a solution that provides cities with a web-based dashboard and API that offers analysis tools to understand mobility services and their impacts and thus build more efficient and sustainable transport systems for people and goods. The startup has been selected to develop its pilot project in Istanbul in Turkey.
Dashfactory, a bicycle-mounted device, automatically calculates the distance at which overtaking vehicles pass and records video sequences including all relevant data in accordance with data protection regulations. In case of damage, the recordings can be used as valid evidence in a court of law. The start-up has been selected to carry out its pilot project in the city of Milan in Italy.
One city, one challenge
ScaleTHENGlobal, which is supported and funded by EIT Urban Mobility, selected the 15 most promising start-ups from the European ecosystem to, among other benefits of the programme, be present at SCEWC 2021 and thus achieve visibility among investors and the necessary funding to scale their projects. Within this programme, the start-ups presented solutions that responded to different challenges launched by various cities for the subsequent execution of a pilot.
The challenge posed by Las Palmas de Gran Canaria consisted of the implementation of a tool to help automate the logistics of the public bicycle system in the city, including a map with the distribution of bicycles and a system of alerts with empty or full stations.
On the other hand, the challenge launched by Istanbul was to help the city develop adequate mobility policies and to steer urban mobility to encourage better use of public transport.
Finally, Milan’s challenge aimed to make urban traffic safer, as well as to have an improved cycling infrastructure to encourage more people to use cycling.
