Students from the Barcelona School of Telecommunications Engineering (ETSETB-UPC) Have Developed an App to Estimate Users’ Exposition to Emissions

MAPPO (MAP+APP+POllution), is a mobile application created to search for alternative less polluted routes to move from place to place within the cities of Barcelona, Terrassa and other nearby locations. It has been developed by a group of ten students from the Barcelona School of Telecommunications Engineering (ETSETB). MAPPO shows three alternative routes to make the same itinerary: the shortest route, the less polluted route and the intermediate route.

The app has been designed as part of the subject “Advanced Engineering Project” of the ETSETB – coordinated by the telecommunication teachers Dr. Elisa Sayrol and Dr. Eduard Alarcon – and also makes an estimation of the equivalent carbon footprint according to the route generated and the mode of transportation. Additionally, it allows to share the information with other users and make rankings to know who “less polluting” user is and how their mobility footprint evolves.

The application has been developed within the 4I4U project framework, co-funded by the EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union. The consortium behind this project is conformed by the municipality of Barcelona, CARNET, Toulouse Métropol, INSA Toulouse and Lycée Gallienei. Furthermore, this citizen engagement project about urban mobility engages citizenship in the co-creation and co-ideation of proposals and dialogues.

The project 4I4U is oriented to make youth groups between 15-23 years old more sensitive about their equivalent carbon footprint emitted in their routes, and sustainable modes of transportation and mobility. At the same time, it allows different disciplines, not necessarily related to urban mobility, to show their mobility knowledge learned through real projects and how they can contribute to urban mobility from a transversal approach.
