CARNET presents the SEAT Autonomous Driving Challenge
The SEAT Autonomous Driving Challenge is a new project format, designed and organized by CARNET and powered by SEAT. Its target is mid-term training and development of future talent in robotics and artificial intelligence. The event will be the first public project of this magnitude in Spain. In addition to the CARNET network, the project is supported by TU Berlin represented by the expert team of Prof. Dr Raúl Rojas, an European reference in autonomous driving technologies, and Prof. Dr Alberto Sanfeliu, the Scientific Director of the “Maria de Maeztu Unit of Excellence” of the IRI (UPC-CSIC).
The project consists of two phases. First, an 8-month training and technical development stage, during which participants will programme the model cars developed by Dr Rojas’s team at TU cars to interact with the urban environment using autonomous technologies. Second, a final showcase will take place in the Smart City Expo World Congress in November 2017 at the Fira de Barcelona.
A total of nine teams, from the most relevant academic centres in Spain, will compete in the final competition. A prize of 15,000 euros will be distributed between the three winning teams.
CARNET is delighted that a high number of education institutions have joined the event, confirming that CARNET is on the right path, focusing on innovation.
On 18 and 19 April, the technical workshops organized by CARNET took place at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). The workshops were led and taught by Dr Rojas’s team. Dr Sanfeliu mentored participants during the 8 months of the project, by providing technological support.
This competition pursues the challenge of developing a car with fully automated driving functions and the necessary software architecture. The purpose is to use existing technology to solve future mobility problems and anticipate changes. The purpose of the project is to capture future talent, and train individuals for 8 months in new technologies.
Barcelona will be the place where it will be shown that miniature competing cars can indeed drive autonomously.
The project website is already available.
